Midweek Blues

MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/05/18)---It went from bad to worse for Concordia on Wednesday. The Cobbers found out early in the day that senior Ty Johnson would be unable to compete in their dual meet against Division II University of Mary and then the Cobbers dropped seven of the first eight matches and lost 40-7.

Johnson, one of the top Cobber wrestlers this season, was ruled out with a skin ailment, and then had to watch Mary earn four pin falls on their way to the victory.

The team match started at the 184-lb weight class and Concordia only trailed 6-4 after two bouts. Freshman Jacob Arends earned one of the two individual wins on the night for CC. He scored a takedown in each of the three periods and came away with a 12-4 major decision at 197. Arends led 4-1 after the first period and then recorded an escape and takedown in the second to push the lead to 7-2. He then had two more takedowns and the riding time bonus point to win by eight.

Arends has now won three of his five matches and has eight wins on the season.

Concordia would then drop six straight matches before senior Travis Deegan was able to stop the trend with a 6-1 win at 165. Deegan, who finished second at the MSU Moorhead Dragon Open last weekend, did his damage in the second period. He led 2-1 after one and then outscored his opponent 3-0 in the middle period. Neither wrestler mounted any offense in the third and Deegan was able to ride out the match, earn the bonus point and record the 5-point victory.

Deegan has now won three of his past four bouts and has seven victories on the year.

UP NEXT: Concordia will compete in the last multi-team invitational of the 2018 calendar year when they travel to Illinois to participate in the North Central Invite on Saturday, Dec. 8. The Cobbers will then finish off 2018 with a pair of dual meets on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at Jamestown.
