Early Matches Prove Costly

BISMARCK, N.D. (11/29/17)--- No.21-ranked Concordia lost four bonus-point matches to start their dual meet with No.23-ranked University of Mary, fell behind 21-0 and lost 33-12.

The Cobbers split the final six individual bouts against the Marauders but it was too late as they lost their first dual meet of the season.

Mary (2-0) earned pins in two of the first three matches and added a technical fall in the other to push Concordia into a 17-0 hole. The Cobbers then gave up a major decision to push the deficit to 21 points. The Marauders won seven of the 10 matches in the dual and six of the seven were bonus point victories.

The first victory of the night for Concordia came at 157 where freshman Tony Struntz outscored his opponent 13-12 in an offensive showcase match. The win was Struntz' eighth of the season and he is now 8-3 on the year.

No.5-ranked Jacob Johnson earned the most dramatic win of the night. He came up with a last-second takedown and a four-point near fall to come away with a 7-1 win at 174. The bout was tied at 1-1, with each wrestler earning a point for an escape at the start of the second and third periods before Johnson went on a rare offensive attack to gain the win. Johnson is now 6-4 on the year.

The most dominating performance of the night came at 197 where Cobber freshman Ethan Kimber earned a pin in the first minute of the opening period. Kimber sized up his opponent in the first 30 seconds of the bout and then scored a takedown before getting the pin at the 59-second mark.

Kimber has now won seven matches this year and five have come by a pin. He leads the team n pins this season. Kimber is 7-2 on the season.
