Stageberg Caps All-American Season

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (3/12/16)—Jakob Stageberg finished off his All-American season by placing sixth at the NCAA National Meet.

Stageberg lost in overtime in his semifinal match then dropped a decision in the consolation semifinals before losing in the fifth-place match.

Stageberg finishes the year with an impressive 35-10 record. His 35 victories ties for the fifth most in school history in a single season.

Stageberg finished championship Saturday by falling 5-3 in the tie-breaker-1 overtime period. Stageberg battled with CJ Pestano of Central (Iowa) through the first periods with each wrestler getting an escape point at the start of the second and third periods.

The match was won at the end of the first tie-breaker period. Neither athlete scored a point in the first overtime session and then Stageberg started in the top position to start tie-breaker 1. Stageberg held Pestano down for almost the entire 30-second tie-breaker period but then Pestano was able to get a reversal and then put Stageberg on his back to get a 2-point near fall.

Stageberg got an escape point and a point for Pestano stalling in the second half of the tie-breaker 1 overtime but couldn't get a last-second takedown and lost 5-3.

Stageberg lost 7-3 in the consolation semifinal to Jacob Spearman of Washington and Jefferson before getting pinned by Arnulfo Olea of No.1-ranked Wartburg.

Stageberg's sixth-place finish marks the 10th time in the last 11 years that the Cobbers have had at least one wrestler place in the top 6 of a weight class at the NCAA National Meet.

Stageberg is the program's 26th NCAA All-American and the 14th in the past seven seasons.
