13 Top 6 Finishes At Season Opener

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (11/07/15)—It was a tale of the known and the unknown for Concordia at the season-opening Wis.-Stevens Point Pointer Open. 2015 NCAA Meet participant Gabe Foltz won the 133-lb weight class and unheralded Aaron Senne took the title in the 149-lb division.

At the end of the day the Cobbers had 13 of their 23 wrestlers finish in the top 6. The Cobbers routinely had multiple place winners in each weight class as they opened the 2015-16 season.

Foltz went 4-0 on the day as he earned a pin fall in his opening match and then a decision in the quarterfinals before recording a technical fall in the semifinals and an injury default in the championship match.

Senne led a quartet of Cobbers in the 129-lb weight class that all finished in the top 4. In a weight class tournament that could have been held in the Concordia room, Senne beat three teammates in his final three matches to claim his first weight-class win at the college level.

A trio of freshmen finished 2-3-4 behind Senne. Ty Johnson was second at 149 while Ben Baumgartner was third and Rylee Anderson was fourth. All three had only one loss on the day and all of those losses came against Cobber teamates.

Concordia also had multiple place winners at the 174-lb and 197-lb weight classes. Sophomores Jacob Johnson and Dane Ringquist finished fourth and sixth at 174 while Kody Van Den Eykel and Hunter SantAmour went third and fourth at 197.

Johnson was 4-2 on the day while Ringquist went 3-2. Van Den Eykel was 4-1 with his only loss coming to NCAA Division II opponent Josh Anthony of Wis.-Parkside. Parkside is ranked 16th in Division II. SantAmour was 3-2 with his losses coming to Van Den Eykel and Bo Seidel of Wis.-Parkside.

The "Warrior of the Day" award went to sophomore Jakob Stageberg who wrestled in seven matches on the day, went 5-2 and finished fifth at 125. Staegeberg narrowly lost 7-6 to Ronzel Darling of Parkside in the first round. Darling is ranked eighth in Division II and was an NCAA Meet participant in DII last year.

The other Cobber top 6 finishers included Adam Presler who place fifth at 141, Parker Jackson who was sixth at 165 and Dan Marquette who came away with a fourth-place showing at 184. Marquette's only two losses were to NCAA Division I athletes and his loss in the third-place match came to Hunter Ritter from Wis.-Madison.
