Tune-Ups And Positioning At North Country Open
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (2/07/15)—Concordia used the annual North Country Open held at St. John's for a tune-up for some wrestlers and as clarification in team position for others. The Cobbers took 26 wrestlers to the meet and came away with a trio of place winners.
Unlike in years past where the meet was almost exclusively NCAA Division III and NAIA teams, this year's invite had a Division I and II flavor to it. Wrestlers from the University of Minnesota, North Dakota State, St. Cloud State and MSU Mankato were abundant in every weight class.
The crew that participated in the meet was without several key Cobber regulars as the coaching staff wanted to make evaluations of other athletes heading into the final stretch of the season.
Aaron Dick, Yonas Gebreab and Brandon Larson showed why they have been in a regular rotation for Concordia throughout the season as they all finished in the top 6.
Dick went 2-2 at 125 and placed fourth in the weight class. His big win on the day came in the consolation semifinal when he scored a major decision over an athlete from St. John's.
Gebreab, the team's starting wrestler at 149 went 3-1 for the meet and placed sixth. He lost his first match but then came back to earn three straight decisions before having to retire because of health issues for the final two bouts.
Larson continues to round into wrestling match shape after sitting out almost a full month because of an injury. Larson had the most wins of any CC athlete on the day. He went 4-2 at 184 and placed fifth. His only two losses came at the hands of wrestlers from the University of Minnesota. Larson is now 14-6 on the season.
Alexi Bode was the only other Concordia athlete that had three wins on the day. He went 3-2 at 157 and had wins over a pair of wrestlers from Southwest MN State. Specht was also 3-2 at 157
Concordia will head back to Collegeville when they wrestle St. John's in a dual match on Friday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.
