Bergeron Adds Dragon Open Champ To His Resume

MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/07/14)—No.6-ranked Concordia traveled across 8th street to compete in the annual MSU Moorhead Dragon Open. Senior All-American Jacoby Bergeron led the Cobber crew by winning the 141-pound weight class.

Concordia had 25 wrestlers compete in the meet which featured athletes separated into two different divisions. The Red Division was for returning varsity wrestlers while the White Division was for freshmen or collegiate newcomers.

Bergeron needed to win only two matches to claim the title at 141. He won both of his matches over athletes from NCAA Division I North Dakota State. Bergeron earned a 7-2 decision over freshman Thomas Walton in the semifinals and then beat sophomore Clayton Cathey 4-3 in the championship bout. Walton was a two-time North Dakota state high school champion while Cathey placed third at the NCAA Division I West Regional last year as a freshman. Cathey also was named to the All-Western Conference Third Team in 2014-15. Cathey was 7-4 on the season entering the tournament.

Bergeron, who is currently ranked eighth at 141 in Division III, is now 17-7 on the season. He leads the team in victories and has now won six of his past seven matches.   

Justice Davis, Sebastian Gardner and Will McCarthy were the other Cobber wrestlers to post a top 3 finish in the Red Division. All three athletes placed third in their weight class.

Davis went 4-1 at 285 and earned his third top 3 finish in a multi-team invitational this season. Davis used a pin fall and a decision in the first sudden victory period in his first two matches to advance to the semifinals. He then lost to former University of Nebraska wrestler Donny Longendyke in the semifinals but then proceeded to post his second pin fall of the day in the wrestleback semifinals before beating Nader Abdullatif of MSU Moorhead in the third-place match.

Davis is now 16-5 on the year and has posted victories in nine of his last 11 matches.

Gardner earned his third-place finish at 184 by winning three of his four bouts on the day. He won a 3-1 decision in the quarterfinals before dropping a 3-2 decision to Uthman Rabiu of Division II St. Cloud State. Gardner then picked up his third-place spot by posting a major decision and a pin fall in the wrestlebacks. Gardner is now 8-4 on the year.

McCarthy lost his first match at 133 but then reeled off two straight wins to earn his third-place finish. McCarthy pinned Hunter Weber of NDSU in the wrestleback semifinals and then scored a major decision over Austin Leibel of MSU Moorhead who he lost to by a major decision in the first match of the day. The win over Weber avenged a pin fall loss in the Cobber Open two weeks ago.    

McCarthy is now 7-6 on the year.     

Jakob Stageberg, Nate Humann and Tyler Hoffman collected top 3 finished in the White Division at the meet. Stageberg and Humann were in the top 3 at 125. Both wrestlers went 1-1 in the division. Stageberg is now 15-6 for the season and Humann is 6-8.

Hoffman went 3-1 and placed third at 285. His only loss was in a hard-fought 3-2 decision against Adam Freimund of North Dakota State. Hoffman, who joined the team after completing the season for the Cobber football team, is now 5-5 on the year and has recorded top 5 finishes in the last two multi-team invites.

Concordia will now travel to St. Cloud to take on St. Cloud State in a dual meet on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. The Huskies are currently ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Division II rankings.
