National Champion Hired As Assistant Coach

MOORHEAD, Minn. (7/01/14)—Former two-time NCAA Division III National Champion Phil Moenkedick has been hired as assistant coach at Concordia. Moenkedick replaces former assistant Clay Nagel who stepped down to take a job at Frazee High School.

Moenkedick had been teaching and coaching at Perham High School ever since he graduated from Concordia in 2011.
 
Moenkedick is one of the most decorated athletes in Concordia wrestling history. He won the Division III national championship in 2010 and 2011. Moenkedick, who was a three-time All-American, amassed a school record 135 victories over his storied four-year career at Concordia. He recorded an impressive 135-10-0 career record and had over 30 wins in three of his four seasons.     

Cobber head coach Matt Nagel was very excited about the hire and started, "Phil's background in Division III and his knowledge of what it takes to be successful on the national level will be a huge asset for the program."

In addition to his dominance on the mat, Moenkedick was also successful in the classroom where he earned Capital One Academic All-District Team honors in his junior and senior seasons and was a three-time Scholar All-American. Moenkedick carried a 3.50 grade point average over his four years at Concordia while majoring in Health and Physical Education.

"Phil is a great example of a Division III student/athlete", said Matt Nagel. "He will be a great role model for our athletes and will be a daily reminder that athletes can win national championships and not have to sacrifice excellence in the classroom."

Moenkedick will also teach in the Health and Physical Education Department at Concordia.
