Rest For Some, Experience For Others

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (2/01/14)— No.6-ranked Concordia used the North Country Open hosted by St. John's to give some of their less experienced wrestlers a chance to step into the limelight.

While all but one weight-class starter remained in Moorhead, the Cobbers had several quality individual performances and were led by junior Will McCarthy. McCarthy went 3-2 in the 133-lb weight class and finished in fourth place. He lost in the semifinals to Josh Rodriguez of North Dakota St. who went on to win the weight-class championship. McCarthy had a seven-match winning streak come to a halt in the semifinals. His three victories up his season total to 13.

Jake Krogstad was the only other Concordia athlete to post a top 5 finish at the meet. He went 3-2 at 165 and placed fifth. It was only the second meet since the middle of December for Krogstad. He has won seven of his last nine matches and is now 14-8 on the year.

One of the bright spots for "Generation Next" in 2014 has been the upside of Justice Davis. Davis continued his first-year success on Saturday but was then halted by an injury. Davis recorded a 5-0 decision in the first round and then a 6-3 victory in the quarterfinals before suffering an injury at the 1:07 mark of his semifinal match.

The Cobbers will finish off the "regular season" with a pair of dual meets. Concordia will head across 8th street to square off against MSU Moorhead on Feb. 4 before returning home to host St. John's in the final dual meet of the season on Feb. 11.
