Washed Away At Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. (1/25/14)—Concordia's three-match win streak, and No.2 national ranking, was swept down the river in the final two matches of the Border Brawl Dual Meet hosted by UW-Whitewater on Saturday.

The Cobbers opened the meet by posting a 27-10 win over UW-Stevens Point to tie the school record for dual-meet victories in a season but then got pulled under the current in their final two matches of the day, losing 23-12 to No.9-ranked Olivet and then 20-17 to the No.3-ranked Warhawks.

Concordia is now 12-4 in dual meets this season. The 12 wins ties the program record set back during the 2009-10 campaign.

Senior Cody Kasprick was the only Cobber wrestler to go undefeated on the day. He won a pair of matches by pin fall and then earned a forfeit victory in his other bout.

The Cobbers won seven of the 10 individual bouts in the opener against Stevens Point. Gabe Foltz and Jacoby Bergeron started with wins and then Jake Long gave CC an 11-3 lead with a major decision at 149. A trio of wins at 165, 174 and 184 sealed the win for Concordia. Brandon Haluptzok, Sebastian Gardner and Chris Harrison earned victories to give the Cobbers an insurmountable 21-6 lead. Kasprick capped the match by pinning his opponent at the 3:57 mark.

The tide quickly came in and swallowed the Cobbers under in the first five bouts of the dual with Olivet. Before Concordia could come up for air, they were down 12-3. The second wave of matches finished CC off as they lost three of the final four bouts and dropped an 11-point decision. Bergeron, Haluptzok and Kasprick were the lone winners against the Comets.

The final match of the meet was similar to the second with Concordia not being able to tread water in the opening matches and then getting swept under late. The Cobbers lost three straight to start the dual with Whitewater. Long and Kyle LeDuc brought CC back to within one point at 9-8. LeDuc's victory at 157 was a bonus-point win as he carded a 17-0 technical fall. Concordia then lost four of the last six matches to lose 20-17. Gardner and Kasprick were the lone winners in the final stretch.

Kasprick's three wins on the day bring his overall season record to 18-9. He now has eight pin falls on the year.

The two-win wrestlers at the meet were Bergeron, Long, Haluptzok and Gardner. Bergeron, Long and Gardner all join the 20-win club for the season with their victories. Bergeron and Long both have a team-high 21 wins for the year while Gardner is at 20. LeDuc and Harrison also reached the 20-win mark with their one victory on the day.

The Cobbers will look to put an end to their losing skid, and break the school record for dual wins, when they host Dickinson State on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m.
