Nationally-Ranked Tour Continues

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/20/12)—Daron Hohbein and Josten Coleman provided the lone highlights for Concordia in the Cobbers' 33-6 loss to No.1-ranked St. Cloud State on Friday.

For the second straight dual match Concordia squared off against one of the top t teams in NCAA Division II. The Huskies entered the match as the top ranked team in DII, having won their first 14 dual matches of the year. SCSU won the prestigious NWCA National Duals Tournament and the Grand Canyon Duals and lived up to their reputation as the preseason No.1 pick in Division II.

Hohbein and Coleman earned the only victories for Concordia in the match. Hohbein won 7-5 in his match at 133 against Andy Pokorny. Hohbein led 5-3 after the first period and then sealed the match in the second when he scored the only two points and took a 7-3 lead into the final frame. Hohbein never let Pokorny back into the match and earned his 11th win on the year.

Coleman posted the most dramatic win of the match at 165. He rallied from a 5-4 deficit after the first period and earned a 7-6 victory that was determined by riding points. Coleman tied the match at 6-6 in the third period and then held his opponent down to start the riding time. He held on to his upper position in the final 1:00 and came away with enough time to score the match-deciding point. The win is the second straight for Coleman against a DII opponent. He registered a pin fall against #5 Augustana on Sunday. He is now 8-9 on the year.   

The two closest losses for the Cobbers occurred at 149 and 197. Kyle LeDuc was locked in a battle with Josh Howk at 149 until the final moments of the third period. LeDuc tied the match at 3-3 with a takedown midway through the third period but then gave up an escape and fell 4-3. No.6-ranked Nate Schmitz lost 5-3 to No.3-ranked Luke Munkelwitz at 197. Schmitz was all square with Munkelwitz, the reigning NSIC Wrestler of the Week, after two periods but Munkelwitz was able to come away with a takedown in the third period and won by two.

Concordia will continue with their nationally-ranked tour when they compete at the Minnesota Duals on Saturday, Jan. 28. The Cobbers will square off against No.2-ranked Augsburg and then No.9-ranked St. John's before finishing the day by wrestling against St. Olaf. All three matches will be held at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.
