Another Tough 4-2 Score Line For The Cobbers
MOORHEAD, Minn. (02/04/22)---Concordia played even with St. Benedict through two periods of play, but then the Bennies notched a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the third frame and held on for a 4-2 victory.
The loss is the third straight 4-2 decision the Cobbers have dropped. Concordia is now 6-12-0 in all games and 2-9-0 in the MIAC. St. Benedict wins for the fourth straight game and is now 9-7-0 in all games and 5-4-0 in league play.
The Bennies opened the scoring with a goal at 12:16 of the first period. It would be the only goal of the opening 20 minutes of play, in a period where CSB held a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal.
The Cobbers turned the tables on St. Ben's in the second period. CC got the only goal of the frame and held a 20-7 edge in shots on goal.
Junior McKenzie Oelkers tied the game with less than 2-minutes to play in the period when her centering pass from the left circle was redirected in front of the goal and slid past the CSB goalie. Oelker's third goal of the year came at the 18:07 mark and was assisted by Lexi Woodward.
The game changed in the first five minutes of the third period. St. Ben's netted a pair of even-strength strikes 2:23 apart to grab a 3-1 lead.
Concordia wouldn't go quietly and stormed back to get to within one goal 2:14 after CSB's third goal of the game. Senior Jordie Eggerdahl slid a perfect pass from the left side boards into the middle of the ice where junior defenseman Grace Doerring settled the pass, and then fired a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net from the top of the faceoff circles.
The goal at 6:33 was Doerring's first collegiate goal and it gave Concordia new life heading into the final 13-minutes of play.
The Cobbers had several chances before they were awarded a power play at the 13:19 mark. CC was unable to capitalize on the player-advantage situation, and then had four shots on goal before CSB closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal with only 4-seconds left on the clock.
Concordia outshot St. Ben's 37-30 in the game. Neither team scored on the power play. The Cobbers were 0-for-3, while the Bennies failed to score in their only PP chance of the night.
Abbey Hardwick, Hannah Christian and Brooke McMillen all had a game-high five shots on goal for the Cobbers.
Kiana Flaig made 26 saves in goal for Concordia.
