Third Period Thwarts Cobbers

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (2/15/20)---Concordia was deadlocked with 17-win Augsburg through two periods in the series finale in Minneapolis but then the Auggies were able to outscore the Cobbers 3-1 in the third period to record the 4-2 win.

The teams were scoreless after one period and then both scored one even-strength goal in the second period before the four-goal decisive third frame.

The Auggies got on the board first in the fifth minute of the second period and then Libby Hinrichs tied the game with her third goal of the season at the 14:59 mark. Seniors Amanda Flemming and Ally Wiitala earned the assists on the play that sent the teams into the locker room tied at 1-1.

Concordia was outshot 23-10 in the first two periods and once again freshman goalie Kiana Flaig was able to keep CC close with her solid play between the pipes.

Augsburg was able to earn the win when they scored a pair of goals in the first three minutes of the final period of play. The Auggies took a 2-1 lead with a shorthanded goal at 1:19 and then pushed the lead to two goals with a second score just 1:06 later.

Flemming would then bring back Concordia's chances when she trimmed the lead to one goal at 5:39. The even-strength score was Flemming's third of the year and Allison O'Kane was credited with the assist.

The teams then went back-and-forth to try and score the decisive "next" goal. Augsburg finally prevailed in the last five minutes of the game when they scored a power play goal at 15:10.

The game featured 11 penalties and 11 power play chances. The Cobbers were whistled for five penalties and went 0-for-6 on the power play while the Auggies went to the penalty box on six occasions and went 1-for-5 with the extra skater.

Augsburg finished the game with a 32-17 advantage in shots on goal. Hinrichs had a game-high five shots on goal and Flemming added three.

INSIDE STAT INFO: Kiana Flaig stopped 28 shots in the game and now has 646 for the season. She is now tied for second on the single-season save list with Andrea Klug who made 646 saves in 2017. Flaig needs 21 more stops to break the school record of 666 set by Shyla Wilson in 2001.
