Cobbers Drop Opener At Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (2/14/20)--- Concordia gave up the first four goals of the game and lost 5-1 at Augsburg. The Cobbers gave up a single goal in the first, two in the second and another goal at the start of the third before they were able to get on the board.

The loss, in the series opener, drops Concordia's record to 6-16-0 overall and 4-11-0 in the MIAC. The Auggies win for the seventh straight game and are now 17-5-0 in all games and 12-3-0 in conference play.

Augsburg wasn't able to get a shot past Cobber freshman goalie Kiana Flaig until the final six minutes of the opening period. The Auggies would score the only goal of the period at 16:00 and take a 1-0 lead into the first break.

The Auggies then added goals midway through the second period and then again at 13:03 to grab a 3-0 lead after two periods.

The Cobbers allowed a fourth straight goal in the sixth minute of the final period before junior Maiah McCowan notched her fifth goal of the season to bring Concordia within three goals at the 16:03 mark of the third. Mackenzie Bergstrom earned the assist on the even strength goal.

Augsburg would score an empty net goal at 18:44 to bring the final total to 5-1.

The Auggies held a 42-23 advantage in sots on goal in the game. McCowan had a team-high four shots on goal while Libby Hinrichs had three.

Flaig made 37 saves in goal and now has an MIAC best 618 for the season.

There were only three power plays in the game and neither team scored with the extra skater. The Cobbers only had one chance while the Auggies were 0-for-2 on the power play.
