Cobbs Fall In Opener At No.10 UST

MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/06/19)---Concordia conceded two unanswered goals in the final 11 minutes of the third period and lost 3-1 at No.10-ranked St. Thomas on Friday.

Senior Meghan Rethemeier scored her first goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 at the 8:34 mark of the final frame but then the Tommies got the game winner 1:15 later and added an empty-net tally in the final two minutes to push the final to 3-1.

Concordia continues its trend of trading wins and losses and moved to 4-4-0 on the year. The Cobbers have gone win then loss in the last six games. CC is now 2-3-0 in the MIAC.

The league-leading Tommies are now 6-2-3 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

The story of the 36 minutes of the game was Concordia freshman goalie Kiana Flaig. Flaig turned aside the first 24 shots she faced as the Cobbers were outshot 24-7 before St. Thomas finally got on the board with 3:45 left in the second period.

Concordia was able to kick start its offense in the final two minutes of the middle period when they put up four shots on goal on a power play chance. CC then had three more shots on goal before Rethemeier stepped up and tied the game at the 8:34 mark of the third period.

Sophomore Brenna Mjoness and Libby Hinrichs were credited with the assists on the play. It was Mjoness' third point of the season and Hinrichs collected her first helper of the year.

In the end Concordia was outshot 40-21 with Flaig making a season-high 37 saves.

Mjoness and Megan Mohr led the Cobbers with four shots on goal each.

Neither team was able to score on the power play. The Cobbers were 0-for-3 while the Tommies were shut down in their one power play chance.
