Three Unanswered Leads To Series Split

WINONA, Minn. (11/16/19)---Concordia scored three unanswered goals and beat St. Mary's 3-1 to gain a split in the conference-opening series of the season.

The Cobbers gave up the first goal of the game but got goals from Ally Wiitala, Maiah McCowan and Callie Fagerstrom to win for the third time in the last four games.

Concordia is now 3-2-0 in all games and 1-1-0 in the MIAC. St. Mary's is now 1-4-0 overall and a similar 1-1-0 in league play.

The teams opened the game by skating through 13 minutes of scoreless hockey. Both teams then scored a goal in a span of 34 seconds.

St. Mary's opened the scoring with a goal at 13:05 and then the Cobbers went on the power play at 13:29. It took the Cobbers just 10 seconds to tie the game as Wiitala added to her team-leading goal total at the 13:39 mark. Wiitala's goal was her third of the year. She had two goals in the first three years of her Cobber career combined. Wiitala has now scored in three of the past four games.

Fagerstrom and Amanda Flemming earned the assists on the game-tying goal.

Neither team scored in the second period and then the first nine minutes of the third period. Concordia recorded the game-winning goal at the 9:38 mark. The unassisted, even-strength goal was McCowan's  second goal of the season.

Fagerstrom sealed the win by sliding home an empty-net goal with 49-seconds left in the third period.

Concordia outshot St. Mary's 29-23 in the game. Wiitala led all players with five shots on goal. Flemming and Kaitlyn Page both had four shots on the day. Flemming leads CC in shots this season with 23. 

Freshman goalie Kiana Flaig turned aside 22 of the 23 shots she faced to record her second collegiate win.       

UP NEXT: Concordia will return home and host St. Benedict in a 2-game series on Nov. 22-23 at the Moorhead Sports Center. The Cobbers lost to the Bennies 3-1 in the season opener on Nov.1.
