Power Play Pushes Series-Opening Win

STORY LINE: Maddie Ellingson scored the game-winning goal in the fourth minute of the third period as Concordia edged St. Benedict 3-2 in a game played in Alexandria. The Cobbers scored all three of their goals on the power play and never trailed in the game as they won for the first time in three games.

RECORDS: The Cobbers stop a 2-game winless streak to start the 2019 calendar year. Concordia is now 9-5-2 overall and 6-1-2 in league play. CC has 14 MIAC points and is currently in third place in the conference standings. St. Benedict loses for the third straight game and is now 5-8-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the MIAC.

POWERFUL PLAY: Concordia went 3-for-3 on the power play in the series opener. The three power play goals are the most in a game this season for CC. The breakout on the PP came after the Cobbers were struggling through a 2-for-24 stretch on the power play in the last seven games.

MORE MEGAN: Megan Dondelinger and Megan Mohr both had two points in the game. Dondelinger scored the second goal for the Cobbers which gave CC a 2-1 lead midway through the second period. Dondelinger also got the assist on the first power play goal at the 2:41 mark of the opening frame. Dondelinger has now scored in two straight games and has six nuggets on the season. Mohr had assists on the first two goals for Concordia and now has three goals and seven assists for 10 points on the year.

DOUBLE CONSONANTS-I-E: Callie Fagerstrom and Maddie Ellingson netted the other two goals in the game for Concordia. Fagerstrom accounted for the opening strike. It was her sixth goal of the season. Ellingson put home the game winner at the 3:27 mark of the third period. It was her second goal of the year and first in conference play.

STATS STUFF: Concordia held a 31-23 advantage in shots on goal which included a 15-8 margin in the third period. Megan Dondelinger led all players with six shots on goal. The Cobber penalty kill unit held the Bennies off the board as they went 0-for-2 on the man-advantage situations.

BOSS NIGHT: For the second straight Friday, senior Brittany Boss got the start in goal. Boss stopped 21 of the 23 shots she faced to earn her fourth victory of the year. Boss also lowered her GAA to 2.92.

UP NEXT: The two teams will stay in Alexandria and finish off the series on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 3 p.m.
