Home-Opening Tie

STORY LINE: Concordia rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the third period to take a 3-2 lead midway through the final frame but then gave up a goal at the 16:21 mark and skated to a 3-3 overtime tie with Bethel in the home opener at the Moorhead Sports Center.

RECORDS: The Cobbers remain unbeaten in their last three games – and in MIAC contests. The Cobbers are now 2-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play. The Royals stop their 4-game losing skid and are now 1-5-1 in all games and 0-2-1 in the MIAC.

SHOULDERING THE OFFENSE: Junior Amanda Flemming opened the scoring in the game when she took a shot off her shoulder which redirected the puck into the net. Fleming skated around the Bethel goal and was waiting to tip the puck into the net on the shot from the point from defenseman Callie Fagerstrom. Unfortunately for Flemming, but fortunately for Concordia, the shot sailed high and Flemming turned to get out of the way of the puck. The puck then hit her shoulder and bounced into the net.

The goal was Flemming's third of the season and she has now scored n three consecutive games.

The goal was only Concordia's second of the season in the first period.  

OFFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN: Callie Fagerstrom's assist on the first goal extended her point streak to five straight games to start the season. Fagerstrom has had at least one point in every game this year and leads the squad with six points. Her six points is tied for tops among defenseman in the MIAC.   

SECOND PERIOD SLUMP: Concordia gave up two goals in the second period and was outscored 2-0 in the middle frame. The Cobbers have given up seven goals in the second period this year and are being outscored 7-5 in the middle period.

THIRD-PERIOD SUCCESS: Concordia tied the game in the third minute of the final period of regulation when Sage Barta took a pass between the circles, moved to her right and then fired the puck in the lower left corner of the net. Kaitlyn Page then put CC up 3-2 when she got out of the penalty box, grabbed control of the puck and then buried her breakaway opportunity. Barta has now scored in two of the past three games and has two goals on the year while Page has scored in three straight games and has three total goals. Her three goals are two more than she had in all of her freshman season last year.

STAT STUFF: Concordia outshot Bethel in all three periods in regulation but not in overtime. The Cobbers held a 33-28 overall advantage in shots on goal. CC went 1-for-2 on the power play while Bethel was 1-for-3 as there were only five penalties called in the entire game.

UP NEXT: The two teams will finish off the 2-game series when they play on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
