Michigan Nice

HANCOCK, Mich. (12/09/17)---Michigan was kind to the Concordia defense. The Cobbers had allowed 15 goals in the last five games before heading east but then shut down Finlandia and only allowed one goal in two games as they posted a 2-1 win on Saturday to gain a sweep in the two-game series.

Concordia scored a single goal in each of the first two periods to push their unbeaten streak to four games. CC is now 6-3-2 on the season as they head into the 2018 portion of the schedule.

On Friday the Cobbers only allowed 18 shots on goal in their 2-0 win. CC almost duplicated the feat on Saturday as they held the Lions to only 21 shots in the 2-1 win.

Offensively Concordia got goals from Tori Davis and Emily Goff to earn their sixth win of the year. Davis scored at 4:03 of the first period to give the Cobbers a 1-0 lead. Gracie Skoog had the assist on Davis' fifth goal of the year.

The Cobbers would only carry a 1-0 lead into the first break despite outshooting Finlandia 13-4 in the opening 20 minutes of play.

The second period would be more of the same with Concordia holding the advantage in zone time and carrying a 14-8 edge in shots on goal. Goff would finally give the Cobbers an insurance goal late in the middle frame. She finished off a passing play from Megan Dondelinger and Mackinzy MacIver to up the lead to 2-0 at the 16:16 mark of the period.

Concordia would put up their highest shot total of any period in the third frame but was unable to pull away from the Lions. The Cobbers' shutout streak of 139 minutes was finally broken in the final minute of play when Finlandia finally got on the board for the weekend on their very last shot on goal at the 19:21 mark of the third period.

The Cobbers finished the game by doubling up the Lions in shots on goal. CC  held a 42-21 advantage in shots on goal. Davis was a tornado around the Finlandia goal and came away with a game-high seven shots on goal. Callie Fagerstrom had six shots on target and was one of 13 Cobber players to have at least two shots on goal in the game.

Cobber junior goalie Brittany Boss stopped 20 of the 21 shots she faced to record her third win of the year.

There were only four power play chances the entire game for both teams.  Concordia was 0-for-1 with the man advantage while Finlandia was held scoreless in their three power play attempts.

PENALTY KILL PROWESS: Concordia didn't allow a power play goal in the two game series as they held Finlandia off the board in their eight chances. Concordia has only allowed five power play goals on the season and their kill rate sits at 86.5% (35-for-40).

GAME-WINNING GOFF: Emily Goff tied teammate Megan Dondelinger for the team lead in game-winning goals. Goff's game winner in the second period on Saturday was her second of the season. The two are tied for second in that stat category in the MIAC.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have an extended break for the Christmas holiday and return to action on Jan. 5-6 when they host No.5-ranked Wis.-River Falls in a two-game series. The Falcons are 6-4-1 on the year and dropped a pair of games against Gustavus last week.
