A Game Of Two Parts

MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/02/17)---The first 40 minutes of the series between Concordia and St. Olaf belonged to the Oles while the final 25 minutes went in favor of the Cobbers as the teams skated to a 2-2 overtime tie.

Concordia was bottled up in its own zone for the first two periods of play, gave up two goals and was outshot 20-16. The Cobbers then turned the table and scored two goals in the third period and outshot St. Olaf 19-9 in the final period and overtime session.

The tie gives Concordia three of the possible four points in the MIAC series. The Cobbers are now 3-1-2 in conference play and have eighth points in the league standings heading into the 2018 calendar year.  CC is tied for fourth place – only two points out of the three-way tie for first place. Concordia is now 4-3-2 in all games.

St. Olaf (2-5-3/1-3-2 MIAC) scored a single goal in the first and second periods. The second goal looked as if it would be the difference maker in the game. The Oles took a 2-0 lead on a power play goal in the final minute of play in the middle frame.

The Cobbers started the comeback trail just after the 1-minute mark of the third period. CC pushed the puck into the St. Olaf zone and then kept the puck between the faceoff circles as they upped their energy level from the first two periods of play.

Megan Dondelinger got Concordia on the board with her third goal of the year. She was able to poke home a rebound from the top of the crease at the 1:03 mark. Emily Goff and Mackinzy MacIver had the assists on the play that gave the Cobbers extra momentum.

Concordia would tie the game before the midway point of the period. The game-tying goal came from an unlikely source as freshman Maiah McCowan netted her first collegiate goal at 6:05. She "sniped" a shot from the faceoff circle that went over the shoulder of the St. Olaf goalie. Kaitlyn Page earned her first collegiate on the play as she set up the goal with an assist.

The last five minutes of the third period and the 5-minute overtime session was all Concordia. The Cobbers continually buzzed the St. Olaf net but were unable to come up with the game winner. CC outshot the Oles 8-3 in the overtime period.

Concordia held a 35-29 advantage in shots for the game. Maddie Ellingson had a team-high six shots on goal while Tori Davis had five and MacIver put up a career-high four shots on net.

Brittany Boss got the start in goal for Concordia in the series finale and turned aside 27 shots. She is now 2-1-2 on the year.

Concordia went 0-for-3 on the power play and St. Olaf scored one time in their four man-advantage situations.

TOP LINE TROUBLE: Saturday's series finale marked only the second time all season that the Cobbers' top line of Amanda Flemming, Tori Davis and Josee Lundgren didn't have at least one point. The other game where the top line was held off the board came in the second game of the season when CC was shutout by Northland 2-0.  
 
WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will finish off the 2017 portion if its schedule when they travel to Hancock, Mich. to take on Finlandia in a two-game series on Dec. 8-9. The Lions are 2-6-1 on the year and coming off a series split with Marian (Wis.).
