Davis & Lundgren Goals Not Enough

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (11/21/17)--- A string of three straight goals proved too much to overcome as Concordia lost 4-2 in a tough non-conference game at Wis.-Eau Claire.

The Cobbers scored the first goal of the game against the Blugolds, who was ranked just outside the Top 10 in Division III in the latest USCHO.com poll, but couldn't hold the lead and gave up three straight in the first and second periods to lose for the second straight game.

Concordia is now at .500 for the season as they fall to 3-3-1. Eau Claire ups their overall mark to 4-2-1 with all four wins coming against MIAC opponents.

Senior captain Tori Davis broke the ice in the first period when she netted the opening goal of the game midway through the frame. Davis' even-strength goal at 10:20 was her third of the season and Amanda Flemming and Megan Mohr were credited with the assists on the play.

The Cobbers' lead would last for almost four minutes until the Blugolds scored an even-strength goal of their own at 14:07. Eau Claire held a 12-5 edge in shots on goal for the first 20 minutes of play as the teams headed to the locker room deadlocked at 1-1.

The tie would be broken in the first minute of play in the second period when the Blugolds scored on the power play at the 53-second mark.

Eau Claire would finish off their three-goal streak, and take a 3-1 lead, when they scored at 15:50 of the middle period.

Concordia bookended the period with a power play goal of their own in the final minute of play. Sophomore Josee Lundgren brought the Cobbers back to within a goal when she scored her second goal of the year at 19:43. Freshman Callie Fagerstrom earned the assist on the late-period nugget.

The Cobbers had three shots on goal before Eau Claire got the insurance goal near the midway mark of the final period. Concordia was awarded a power play at 7:40 and couldn't muster a shot on goal. The Blugolds used the momentum from the successful penalty kill to score just 14 seconds after their player stepped out of the penalty box.

Concordia killed off a penalty in the final five minutes of the third period and then pulled goalie Brittany Boss with 58-seconds left in regulation. The Cobbers would put up a pair of shots in the final minute of play with the extra attacker but could never get closer than the two-goal margin.

The Cobbers were outshot 43-22 for the game. Davis led Concordia with six shots on goal.

Boss made a season-high 39 saves in goal for Concordia. She was given her first loss of the season and is now 2-1-1 on the year.

Both teams had a power play marker in the game. Concordia went 1-for-2 on the power play while the Blugolds were 1-for-3.

JUST JOIN THE MIAC: Eau Claire has played seven games this season and five have come against teams from the MIAC. The Blugolds are 4-0-1 in those games with the tie coming against No.7-ranked Gustavus. The 4-2 margin on Tuesday was the closest of any of Eau Claire's four wins against MIAC teams. They blanked the three other teams from the MIAC they played, beating St. Benedict 6-0, Hamline 3-0 and St. Olaf 8-0.

HIGH FIVE FOR FAGERSTROM: With her assist on the Cobbers' second goal against Eau Claire  Callie Fagerstrom extended her point streak to five games. She now has seven points on the year and has at least one point in the team's last five games.

A GREAT EIGHT: Amanda Flemming recorded her team-leading eighth point of the year with an assist on the opening goal of the game. She leads the team in points and goals (5). She is four points shy of her point total from all of last season when she collected 12 points in 25 games.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have a break for the Thanksgiving holiday and then return to action on Dec. 1-2 when they host St. Olaf in a two-game series at the Moorhead Sports Center. The Oles are 2-4-2 in all games and 1-2-1 in league play and are coming off a loss at No.5-ranked Wis.-River Falls.
