Power Plays Propel Series Sweep

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/11/17)---Concordia scored three unanswered goals in the second and third periods to beat St. Catherine 3-1 and earn the sweep in the first conference series of the season.

Freshman defenseman Callie Fagerstrom's power play goal at 14:34 of the final period proved to be the game winner as the Cobbers won for the third time in 2017. CC is now 3-1-0 in all games.

For the second straight game it took the Concordia offense until the second period to get on track. On Friday the Cobbers were held off the board until the sixth minute of the second period. On Saturday it took until the 10th minute of the middle frame to start the scoring.

In both games the Cobbers trailed 1-0 before rallying to score multiple goals in the third period to pick up the win.

All three Concordia goals on Saturday were non-even strength tallies. Senior Emily Goff got the Cobbers on the board midway through the second period when she scored her second goal in as many games. Goff netted the first power play goal at the 9:04 mark. Amanda Flemming and Tori Davis earned the assists on the play. It would be the first of two points in the game for both Flemming and Davis.

The game remained tied at 1-1 until the final six minutes of the third period.  That's when Fagerstrom stepped up and fired home her second goal of the season. Her power play goal at 14:34 would be the game winner and Flemming picked up her second straight assist on the play.

St. Catherine (1-4-0/0-2-0 MIAC) had a couple of shots miss the target in the next three minutes and then pulled their goalie at 18:55.

Davis would capitalize on the empty net when she scored the insurance goal with only 2-seconds left on the game clock. The unassisted tally was Davis' first of the season after she finished second on the Cobbers in goals scored last year.

The Wildcats outshot the Cobbers 29-25 for the game. Concordia had five different players record three shots on goal in the game.

Cobber sophomore transfer goalie Amy Jost made 28 saves to pick up her first win in maroon and gold.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will now head out on the road for the first time this season. The Cobbers will play at Bethel on Nov. 17-18. The Royals are 2-4 in all games and 0-2 in conference play. They were swept by Augsburg this weekend.
