Offense Rolls Late In MIAC-Opening Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/09/17)---In a game that featured increased offensive production in each period, Concordia received goals from five different players, scored three times in the third period and beat St. Catherine 5-3.

The Cobbers showed the rust of a two-week break as they were held off the board in the first period but then put up a pair of goals in the second stanza and added three in the third to win for the conference opener for both teams.

Concordia wins for the second time in the first three games of the season and moves to 2-1. The Wildcats are now 1-3 in all games.

Neither team could muster much offense in the first period. The squads combined for a mere seven shots on goal. St. Catherine was able to get on the board at the 13:37 mark and took a 1-0 lead into the break.

The second period was a 180-degree turn from the opener as the teams combined for 20 shots and three goals. The Cobbers tied the game when sophomore Josee Lundgren scored her first collegiate goal at 5:44. Freshman defenseman Callie Fagerstrom was credited with the assist on the play.

The Wildcats regained their one-goal lead at 14:13 before Concordia tied the game for the second time. The second game-tying goal came just 182 seconds after SCU took the 2-1 lead.

Abbie Canton netted her first goal of the year with an assist going to Mackinzy MacIver. The teams would take the 2-2 scoreline into the third period.

Concordia won the game with three straight goals. Senior Emily Goff put the Cobbers in the lead for the first time in the game when she scored her first goal of the year at 3:09. Maiah McCowan had the assist on the go-ahead goal.

Megan Dondelinger netted the eventual game-winning goal midway through the final period. She scored an even-strength goal at 12:02 to give CC a two-goal cushion.

Amanda Flemming would push the lead to three goals when she slid home an empty-net score at 17:55. The Wildcats would get one back in the final minute of play to bring the final score to5-3.

St. Catherine held a 25-23 edge in shots on goal. Cobber goalie Brittany Boss made 23 saves to earn her first collegiate conference win.

Flemming had a team-high four shots on goal with Lundgren and Brooke McMillen adding three shots each.

Concordia went 1-for-5 on the power play while the Cobber penalty killers held St. Catherine scoreless in their three power play attempts.
