Winning Checklist Complete In Sweep

ST. PAUL, Minn.  (1/14/17)--- Concordia's check list for wins this season has been simple; power play goals, great goaltending and goals from Jess Nelson.

The Cobbers checked off all the items on their success list against Hamline in the series finale and recorded a 3-0 win in St. Paul.

The three-goal victory ups Concordia's conference win streak to five games. The Cobbers have scored at least one power play goals in four of those five straight league wins. Senior goalie Andrea Klug has only allowed two goals in five games and Nelson has seven points and three goals.

The trio of must-haves for Concordia has helped CC move to 10-4-1 overall and 7-1-0 in the MIAC. The Cobbers are tied for first place in the conference standings.

Concordia scored a pair of goals in a span of 4:47 sandwiched around the first intermission. It turns out that the two goals would be all that Klug would need as she stopped all 29 shots she faced in the gam to post her third shutout in her last six starts.

Senior Amber Schaack scored the game-winning goal at 16:01 of the first period. The goal came on the power play which was CC's fifth power play goal in the last six games. Nelson got the assist on the goal.

Nelson would then continue her unbelievable scoring tear in the first minute of the second period. She scored her 12th goal of the year at the 48-second mark to stake Concordia to a 2-0 lead.

Thanks to Klug, and the Cobber defense, that would plenty of offense for the remainder of the game. Klug made 12 saves in the second and then seven more in the third to finish off the shutout.

Tori Davis finished off the scoring for the Cobbers. She scored an even-strength goal at 13:00 of the final period to finish off the win. Amanda Flemming and Jessica Kongelf were credited with the assists.

Concordia outshot Hamline 37-29 for the game and went 1-for-6 on the power play. The Pipers were 0-for-2 on the man advantage for the game.

Davis had a team-high six shots on goal and senior Ellen Rethwisch added five.

DOUBLE-DIGIT DANDY: The 10 overall wins by Concordia marks the 10th straight season that they have won at least 10 games. It is a streak that dates back to the 2006-07 season and is the second longest streak of any team in the MIAC.                       

MORE NELSON NUGGETTS: Jess Nelson scored six goals in the first five games of the season and now has six in her last four games. Her 12 goals leads the MIAC and her 19 total points is tied for lead in the conference. Nelson also has five power play goals which leads the league nad her eight power play points is tops.

NET FILLERS: Concordia leads the MIAC in scoring offense. The Cobbers have scored 46 goals in their first 15 games of the year. CC has scored at least three goals in eight games and are 7-0-1 when they score more than two goals in a game.
   
WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia returns home to host the marquee match-up of the MIAC this season. The Cobbers will square off against Augsburg on Friday, Jan. 20 and Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Moorhead Sports Center. The Auggies are also 7-1-0 in league play. While the Cobbers lead all the offensive categories in the MIAC, Augsburg is on top of all the defensive stat categories.
