2 x 3 = First Loss Of The Season

ST. PAUL, Minn. (11/19/16)—Concordia allowed two goals in each period and lost for the first time all season. The Cobbers couldn't overcome the St. Catherine offensive attack and lost 6-2.

The loss drops Concordia's record to 3-1-1 in all games and 2-1-0 in the MIAC. The Wildcats are now 3-4-0 in all games and win for the first time in league play to go to 1-2-0.

The teams traded goals in the third minute of the first period. Cobber senior Jess Nelson started the scoring trade-off when she found the back of the net on a power play at 2:18. Sophomore Abbie Canton was credited with the assist on the play.

St. Catherine was able to get control of the puck after Concordia won the faceoff and gained the Cobber zone. The Wildcats would then tie the game just 21-seconds after CC got on the board.

St. Catherine would then score the next three goals in the game as they went up 4-1 midway through the second period. SCU scored two goals on eight shots in the first period and then grabbed the three-goal lead at the 11:03 mark of the middle frame.

Concordia regained a bit of momentum in the final three minutes of the period when senior Ellen Rethwisch netted an unassisted goal at 17:38.

The Cobbers were still within striking distance until St. Catherine finished off the game with a goal at 6:53 and then an empty-net tally at 16:20 after Concordia pulled its goalie with 3:40 left in regulation.

Concordia outshot St. Catherine 37-27 for the game including 16-5 in the third period. CC senior Amber Schaack led all players with eight shots on goal. She had at least two shots in each period and four in the third. Junior Tori Davis had five shots on goal.

CC goalie Andrea Klug made 21 saves and was saddled with her first loss of the year.

The Cobbers went 1-for-2 on the power play while SCU was 0-for-3.

WHOA NELLY: Senior Jess Nelson now has a team-leading six goals on the season and leads the team in overall points with seven. She has scored at least one goal in all five games this year and her six goals are tied for second most in the MIAC.     

POWER, POWER, POWER:
Concordia has now scored a power play goal in four straight games and is 8-for-26 on the power play this year.  Their 29.6-percent success rate leads the MIAC and is third best in all of Division III.            

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will finish off its two-game series with St. Catherine on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. at Drake Arena in St. Paul.
