Nelson Nets MIAC Weekly Honor

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/07/16)--- Concordia senior Jess Nelson was named the MIAC Player of the Week after helping the Cobbers go 1-0-1 in their opening weekend against Wis.-Stevens Point.

Nelson had a goal in both games including the game-winning goal on Friday night in Concordia's 3-1 win. For the weekend Nelson had three points and helped the Cobbers go unbeaten in its opening weekend of the year for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

Nelson earns MIAC Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career. Last year Concordia players earned the weekly award on four different occasions.

Nelson started her weekend off by scoring the second goal in Concordia's opening-game victory over the Pointers - who were picked to finish second in the WIAC preseason poll.

Nelson then had a goal and an assist as Concordia skated to a 3-3 tie with Stevens Point on Saturday. She netted the team's opening goal of the game to cut the UWSP lead down to a single goal at 2-1 midway through the second period. She then assisted on the third goal which gave the Cobbers a 3-2 lead at the very end of the middle period.

Nelson's three-point weekend puts her in fifth place in the MIAC in goals and ninth in points. Her two goals are almost halfway to her 2015-16 season total of five.

Nelson will be hoping to continue her scoring success when the Cobbers open MIAC play on Friday and Saturday against St. Benedict.
