Let's Get To The Postseason

BLAINE, Minn. (2/20/16)—The good news for Concordia is that they are in the MIAC playoffs. The bad news is that they will take a two-game losing streak into the postseason.

For the second straight game the Cobbers were unable to score against conference champion Bethel and lost 5-0. CC fell 3-0 in the series opener on Friday.

Concordia ends the regular season with a 13-11-1 overall mark and an 11-7-0 record in conference play. The Cobbers finished in fourth place in the league standings and will be the No.4 seed for the upcoming MIAC tournament.  Bethel ties St. Thomas for the league championship as they improve to 14-9-2 overall and 12-4-2 in the conference.

One of the culprits for the lack of offense on Saturday was the power play. Concordia had five power play opportunities in the game and failed to convert. CC put up 15 shots on goal on the PP but could never find the back of the net.

Defensively the Cobbers gave up four even-strength goals and an empty net strike. Bethel put the game out of reach when they scored three times in the second period. The Royals got on the board in the second minute of the opening frame to carry over their momentum from Friday night. The Royals then scored a trio of goals in the second.

Concordia put up eight shots in each of the three periods of play. The Cobbers were outshot 32-24 in the game. Junior Amber Schaack had a team-high five shots on goal.

Andrea Klug started the game and played the first two periods for Concordia. She made 23 saves before giving way to freshman Brittany Boss in the third period. Boss stopped four shots in the third period as the CC defense limited BU to only five total shots in the final 20 minutes of play.

WHAT A LONG STRANGE TRIP IT'S BEEN
The road was unkind to the Cobbers in 2015-16. Concordia finished with a 3-8 road mark and were 1-5 on the road since the start of the New Year. CC was shutout in four of the six away games in 2016 and was outscored by a combined total of 18-2 in those games.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
The good news for the Cobbers is that they will start their postseason at the friendly confines of the Moorhead Sports Center. Concordia is 10-3-1 at home this year. It gets even better for CC as they are 9-1-0 against MIAC opponents at home this year.

WHAT'S NEXT
Concordia will kick off its sixth straight MIAC postseason when they host No.5 seed St. Mary's on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center. SMU finished the regular season at 10-12-3 overall and 9-7-2 in the MIAC. They split with St. Catherine over the weekend and have won four of the past five games. The Cobbers and Cardinals split their regular-season series in Winona on Dec. 4-5.
