Success Formula Gives Seniors Sweep

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/13/16)—Concordia used its season-long success equation to beat St. Olaf 3-0 and earn the series sweep.

For the Cobbers it's been: Davis scores + Nelson assists + Schaack around the net + Klug saves = wins.

On Saturday, sophomore Tori Davis scored all three Concordia goals as the Cobbers clinched an MIAC playoff spot for the sixth straight season. Davis was helped out by a pair of assists from Jess Nelson and another two helpers from Amber Schaack as the three combined for seven points on the afternoon.

Davis now leads the MIAC in goals scored with 16 while Nelson earned her league-leading 15th assist of the year.

While Davis, Nelson and Schaack led the offense it was junior goalie Andrea Klug who helped shut down the Ole offense. It wasn't quantity for Klug on offense as the CC defense made sure St. Olaf couldn't sustain any offensive pressure/ It was more about quality as Klug made key point-blank saves when the game hung in the balance.

Klug turned aside all 19 shots she faced to extend her own school record of eight shutouts in a single season.

The win pushes Concordia's overall record to 13-9-1 on the year. CC is now 11-5-0 in league play and locked in a tie for second place with Bethel.

The teams skated through a very clean first period with only a pair of penalties which weren't whistled until the final 2:30 of the period.

The game didn't turn in Concordia's favor until midway through the second session when Davis scored the first of her three goals on the day. She was able to get the puck from behind the net while the Cobebrs were on the power play. Davis then wrapped it around the goal and beat the Ole goaltender to the left post before she could stop the puck. Nelson and Schaack earned the first of their two assists on the goal at 11:45.

Concordia took a 1-0 lead into the third period and then Davis put up an insurance goal at 4:06 when the Cobbers were shorthanded. Davis took a perfect pass from Ellen Rethwisch and merely one-timed the puck into the net as she was skating down the slot.

Davis finished off her hat trick when she roofed a rebound at 17:56 of the third period. Schaack took a pass from nelson and hammered a shot on net. The puck bounced back to Davis who was standing at the bottom of the right face-off circle and she slapped home the second chance.

Concordia outshot the Oles 27-19. Davis had a game-high six shots while Jessica Kongelf had four.
