Winning Formula Returns

WINONA, Minn. (12/05/15)—Concordia returned to its winning formula to beat St. Mary's and earn a split in their final MIAC game of 2015.

After conceding nine goals in the past three games and going 1-2, the Cobbers tightened up the defense, scored just enough goals and relied on red-hot goalie Andrea Klug to record a 2-0 win over the Cardinals.

Concordia is now atop the MIAC standings with a 5-1 record in league play. Their five conference wins have all been shutouts. CC is outscoring their league foes 14-0 in their five victories. In their lone conference loss, which came against SMU on Friday, CC has been outscored 4-2.

Concordia is now 6-4 overall. The six wins before Christmas break is the most since the 2011-12 season when they earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Klug and the Cobber defense have been the story of the conference season. Concordia's 0.67 goals against average is the lowest in the MIAC by 0.50 goals. The Cobbers have yet to concede a goal in the league. Klug's 1.25 overall goals against average is also tops in the MIAC and she is 12th in the nation in the stat category. Klug's five shutouts on the year is tied for the top mark in all of Division III.

On Saturday the Concordia defense only made Klug stop 24 shots. CC gave up eight shots in the first period, six in the second and 10 in the third. The Cobbers have only allowed 143 shots in their six conference games which is tied for third best in the MIAC.

While the Cobber defense was putting the clamps on the Cardinal offense, sophomore Tori Davis was continuing her torrid scoring pace. Davis scored both goals for CC on Friday and netted the game winner on Saturday. She has now scored four goals in the last four games. Davis has five goals on the season which equal her total from all of last year.

Davis ended the scoreless tie in the second minute of the period. After playing the first 21 minutes without a goal, she was able to net the game winner at the 1:44 mark. Kayla Nack recorded her second assists in as many games. She now has four points in the last five games. Nack has five points for the season which equals her total from her freshman season in 2014-15.

Ellen Rethwisch
scored her fifth goal of the season midway through the third period to give Concordia the much-needed "insurance" marker. The goal came at 10:33 and was assisted by the Petrich sisters – Cassey and Chelsey.

Concordia wound up outshooting St. Mary's 34-24 for the game. Rethwisch had a game-high six shots on goal while Amber Schaack and Kristin Drechsel had four shots each. Schaack continues to lead the MIAC in shots on goal. She now has 51 on the season which is eight more than the next player on the list.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will finish off the 2015 portion of its schedule when they play at Wis.-Superior on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. The Yellowjackets are 5-5-3 on the season and are in the "others receiving votes" category in the most recent USCHO.com poll.
