3 Unanswered Ends Win Streak

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/29/15)—Less than 24 hours after having their shutout streak ended Concordia watched as their winning streak came to a halt.

The Cobbers gave up two goals in the third period, and three unanswered goals, and lost 3-1 to Marian (Wis.).

Concordia was unable to put the Sabres away after scoring the opening goal of the game midway through the first period and lost for the first time in six games. The Cobbers are now 5-3-0 on the season. Marian ends their five-game losing streak and moves to 3-6-0 for the year.

Concordia controlled possession in the game while the Sabres were able to generate offense on odd-man rushes as they took advantage of the aggressive Cobber defense.

The two teams played back-and-forth in the opening 20 minutes of the game with the only goal coming at the 9:51 mark when senior defenseman Cassey Petrich snapped home a "top shelf" goal from the top of the left face-off circle. The goal was Pertrich's second goal of the season and was set up by Sadie Hayes and Megan Mazanec who both earned their first assists of the season.

Concordia was outshot 8-6 in the first period of play and CC freshman goalie Brittany Boss was able to make the one-goal lead hold up.

The Cobbers continued to hold the puck in the Sabres end for large chunks of time in the second period but were never able to get a decisive second goal to put the game out of reach.

Marian then seized the momentum in the game when they scored in the final minute of play in the period. Concordia was unable to get the puck out of its own end. CC had control of the puck on the sideboards just inside the blue line but couldn't get it out of the zone. The Sabres held the puck in the zone, drove towards the net and tied the score at 1-1 at the 19:20 mark.

Concordia held a 15-5 edge in shots in the second period but went scoreless and were held off the board on the only power play attempt of the frame.

Marian scored the game-winning goal at 9:48 of the third period when the puck skittered out of the right corner and slid toward the net. A group of players convened on the goal and the puck somehow managed to elude Boss and go in the net.

The Cobbers pressed for the equalizer and had several tremendous chances but couldn't find the back of the net. CC had a power play in the final two minutes of play. The Cobbers pulled Boss during the man-advantage situation but still couldn't score and wound up conceding an empty-net goal at 19:01.

Concordia outshot Marian 31-23 for the three periods. Ellen Rethwisch, Hannah Johnston and Jessica Kongelf had four shots each to lead CC.

Boss finished with 20 saves in her second collegiate start.
