Double Digit Delight

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (1/16/15)—It took Concordia eight games to score their first 10 goals of the season. The Cobbers matched that total in a single game as they blasted St. Benedict 10-2 in St. Cloud.

The 10 goals are the most by a Cobber team since the start of the 2010-11 season when they beat Finlandia 10-1.It is only the fourth time in program history they have scored 10 or more goals in a game.

The win is the second in five games in the New Year for Concordia. The Cobbers open a 12-game conference schedule with their fourth overall victory of the year. CC is now 4-8 in all games and 3-4 in conference games. The victory pushes CC into a tie for sixth place in the league standings with the Blazers. The game was the first of 2015 for St. Ben's who falls to 4-7 in all games and identical 304 mark in the MIAC.

Senior captain Maddy Gendreau was at the forefront of the offensive explosion. She had a pair of goals and added three assists for a five-point night. She had four points in the first 13 games of the year combined and now leads CC with nine points.

Gendreau was one of three Concordia players with two goals in the game. Fellow senior Kelsey Vandegrift and freshman Emily Goff both found the back of the net on two occasions in the contest. It was the second and third goals of the year for Vandegrift while it was the first two collegiate tallies for Goff.

Concordia scored four straight goals in the first period to take a 4-0 lead into the break. The four goals scored in the first 20 minutes of play matched the highest goal output in any single game this year.

St. Ben's scored the first goal coming out of the first intermission in the opening minute of the second period but then Concordia countered with a pair of goals before the end of the frame to push the lead to 6-1 heading into the third period.

Concordia duplicated their four-goal first-period explosion in the final period when Vandegrift, Bri Flynn, Tori Davis and Goff all poached goals to make the final score 10-2.

The other two goal scorers for the Cobbers on the night were Bekah Wright and Ellen Rethwisch. Wright picked up her team-leading fifth goal of the season at 11:44 of the first period while Rethwisch got on the board for the third time in the season in the second minute of the second period.

Concordia outshot the Blazers 37-23 for the game. CC held a 13-6 advantage in the first period and then doubled up CSB 14-7 in the third frame.

Not surprisingly, Gendreau led all players with seven shots on goal. She had three in each of the first and third periods. Gendreau now has a team-leading 42 shots on goal for the year.

Junior goalie Madison Denny earned her second win of the season by stopping 21 of the 23 shots she faced.

The same two teams will look to break the sixth-place tie when they finish the two-game series on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 1:30 p.m. at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud.
