Defense Gets To Shine In 1-1 Overtime Tie

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (1/17/15)—Concordia gave hockey fans a little bit of everything on their weekend series at St. Benedict. Less than 24 hours after delighting offensive fans with a 10-2 win, the Cobbers took care of the defensive hockey crowd in a 1-1 overtime tie.

The Cobbers were unable to continue their red-hot offensive streak for two straight games but one goal was enough to secure three conference points from the weekend. Concordia is now 3-4-1 in league play and stuck in a three-way log jam for fifth place in the conference standings. CC is 4-10-1 in all games. The Blazers are one of the two other teams tied with Concordia in the standings. CSB is also 3-4-1 and moves to 4-7-1 overall.

Concordia looked like they might skate away with a sweep but a goal in the final six minutes of the third period tied the game and set the stage for the overtime tie.

Freshman Tori Davis scored the only goal in the game for the Cobbers. Davis' fourth goal the year gave CC a 1-0 lead at the 13:50 mark of the second period. Her unassisted goal looked like it would hold up for the entire 60 minutes as freshman goalie Andrea Klug was on top of her game and the Concordia defense limited the Blazer offense to only 12 shots in the first two periods combined.

The third period was controlled by the special team units for each squad. After only having two penalties called in the first 40 minutes of the game, the referees whistled five penalties in the third frame.

Concordia's third penalty of the period led to the game-tying score. The Cobbers allowed the equalizer at the 14:28 mark with only 17-seconds remaining in the man advantage.

Neither team was able to score in overtime. CC outshot St. Ben's 6-3 in the extra period. Concordia was unable to score even with a full two-minute power play situation at the start of the OT.

The Cobbers outshot the Blazers 36-27 for the game and 73-50 for the two games. Senior defenseman Libby Fransdal led all players with seven shots.Fellow senior Maddy Gendreau had six shots on goal in the game.

Klug finished with 26 saves in the game. She now has a team-best 2.19 goals against average and a 92.0% save percentage.

After playing their first three weekend series on the road in 2015, Concordia will return home to host Augsburg on Friday, Jan. 23 and Saturday, Jan. 24.
