Wisconsin One-Goal Loss Woes Continue

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (1/10/15)—For the third straight game, Concordia dropped a one-goal decision in the state of Wisconsin. The Cobbers made it two consecutive one-goal losses to No.6-ranked Wis.-River Falls as they fell 2-1 on Saturday.

Concordia has now lost 10 times on the year, eight have come at the hands of teams ranked in the top 10 of the nation and the last four defeats have been by a single score. The Cobbers are now 3-10 as they close out the non-conference portion of their 2014-15 campaign and head into MIAC competition for the rest of the regular season.

Concordia never led in the two-game series over the weekend. The Falcons struck first on Saturday when they broke a scoreless tie in the first minute of the second period. The two teams had skated through the first period without a goal. River Falls then went ahead 1-0 on an even-strength goal at the 41-second mark.

The Cobbers would trail by one headed into the third period. CC would be stymied by their lack of scoring on the power play. Concordia went 0-for-4 on the power play in the final 20 minutes and only had one shot on goal during those man-advantage situations.

Wis.-River Falls (11-3) scored the eventual game-winning goal at 3:50 of the final frame.

It would take the Cobbers until the 19th minute of the third period. Concordia pulled goalie Andrea Klug at the 17:45 mark and then sophomore Amber Schaack continued her torrid scoring streak by earning her fifth goal of the season at 18:15. Schaack has now scored four goals in the last six games. Her five-goal total matches her output for the entire 2013-14 season.

Klug went back in goal after the Schaack score and then CC was given one more power play chance when one of the River Falls players was whistled for a delay of game penalty just 3-seconds after the Cobber goal. Unfortunately for Concordia the power play opportunity would be short-lived as CC was whistled for a cross-checking penalty at the 18:26 mark.

Concordia would pull Klug one more time in the final minute of play but were unable to come up with the game-tying goal.

The Cobbers were outshot 30-12 for the game. Senior Maddy Gendreau had a team-high four shots on goal and now leads the Cobbers with 35.

Klug made 28 saves in the game and lowered her season goals against average to 2.36.

Concordia will stay on the road for their third straight away series of 2015 when they play at St. Ben's on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 16-17.
