Another Close Loss To A Top 10 Opponent

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/09/15)—Concordia couldn't climb out of a two-goal hole in the first period and lost 3-2 at No.6-ranked Wis.-River Falls.

The Cobbers gave up a pair of goals 34-seconds apart in the first half of the opening period, couldn't come up with the game-tying goal in the third period and lost for the second straight game. CC is now 3-9-0 with seven losses coming at the hands of teams ranked in the top 10 of the nation.

River Falls (10-3-0) made Concordia chase the game for most of the three periods by scoring the opening goal of the contest on a power play at the 7:46 mark. The Falcons then doubled the lead in less than 40 seconds when they notched their second score at 8:20.

The Cobbers were able hold the fort and get out of the first frame without any more damage.

CC started their comeback when sophomore Amber Schaack notched her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the first three minutes of play in the second period. Schaack's unassisted tally at 2:25 brought the Cobbers within one at 2-1.

River Falls was able to reclaim their two-goal lead midway through the second period when they scored an even-strength goal at 8:45.

Sophomore  Bri Flynn set the stage for a dramatic third period when she scored her first goal of the season with less than six minutes to play in the middle stanza. Flynn, who sat out the first half of the year with an injury, scored at 14:26 with an assist from Jess Nelson.

Neither team would be able to score in the third period. Concordia was able to find the game-tying goal even with their only power play chance of the game. CC had a game-best six shots in the final frame and held the Falcons to only eight shots – their lowest total of the game.

Concordia was outshot 37-14 for the game with Schaack having a team-high three shots on goal.

Madison Denny made 34 saves in goal for the Cobbers.

The same two teams will finish off the two-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. on the campus of Wis.-River Falls.
