Another Season High In Shots Does Not Lead To Win

MEQUON, Wis.  (1/03/15)—For the second straight game Concordia put up a season-high shot total unfortunately it didn't lead to another win as the Cobbers gave up a goal with 9-seconds left in regulation and lost 3-2 at Concordia (Wis.).

Concordia recorded 39 shots on goal less than 24 hours after getting 32 shots in a 4-0 win against the Falcons on Friday. The Cobbers were only to come up with a pair of goals as they lost for the second time in the last four games. CC is now 3-8-0 overall. Concordia University gains the split in the series and is now 6-5-1 for the year.

The game played out just like Friday night's contest with neither team scoring in the first period. The Cobbers held an 11-8 edge in shots but couldn't register the first goal of the game.

Saturday's game turned in a span of 17-seconds midway through the middle period. The Falcons scored two goals in 17 seconds to vault to the 2-0 lead. CU scored their first goal at 9:03 and then added a second at 9:20.

The Cobbers started their comeback trail in the last five minutes of the second period. Sophomore Jessica Kongelf scored her first goal of the season at the 16:44 mark. Kelsey Vandegrift earned her third assist of the weekend on the play. She now has a team-leading four assists for the season.

The goal gave the Cobbers the momentum heading into the second break. CC once again outshot the Falcons in the second with a 10-8 advantage.

Ellen Rethwisch came up with the equalizer midway through the third period. Rethwisch scored on the power play at 9:35 to record her second goal of the year. Senior captain Maddy Gendreau was credited with the assist.

Concordia continued to pound the Falcon goal in the third but couldn't come away with the game winner. CC finished with 18 shots on goal in the 20-minute stanza which is the most for any single period in the season.

Concordia University won the game in the final minute. After the Cobbers called timeout at the 18:54 mark, the Falcons were able to gain the zone and then score the game winner at 19:51.

The Cobbers had one more chance in the final nine seconds but Kongelf's attempt at a last-second game-tying goal was turned aside by the Falcon goalie.

Kongelf led all players with a career-high five shots on goal for the Cobbers.

CC goalie Andrea Klug stopped 19 shots as she started back-to-back games for the first time all year.

The Cobbers will finish up their non-conference schedule next weekend when they play at No.6-ranked Wis. River Falls.
