Regular Season Starts 30 Minutes Too Late

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (11/07/14)—It took Concordia 30 minutes to warm up in the opening game of the 2014-15 season before they started to show signs of the team that made the playoffs for a fourth straight season last year. Unfortunately by the time the Cobbers' "game legs" were in place, No,6-ranked Wis.-Stevens Point had built a three-goal lead and was able to hold off surging Concordia to post a 3-1 victory.

Concordia managed to get only four shots on goal in the first 30 minutes of play but then cut loose for 27 in the final half of the second period and the entire third frame. The Cobbers held a 12-2 edge in shots in the final period but couldn't get closer than two goals.

The Pointers, who were playing their third game of the season, scored a goal midway through the opening period to take a 1-0 lead into the first break. They added two more in the first 10 minutes of the second period and it looked like Stevens Point was going to be able to put up several more.

The game changed midway through the second when Concordia went on the power play and rattled off four straight shots in a row. The momentum would carry over through the rest of the middle period and into the third before the Cobbers were finally able to get on the board.

Freshman Tori Davis scored the opening goal of the season for Concordia when she netted an even-strength score at the 10:37 mark. Junior defenseman Hannah Johnston was credited with the assist on the play.

Concordia continued to press into the offensive attack and fired seven more shots on goal but could never get the all-important "next" goal.

The Cobbers were outshot 25-21 for the game but held a 18-14 advantage in the final two periods of play. Senior captain Maddy Gendreau led all players with six shots in the game. Cassey Petrich added three.

Andrea Klug played the entire game for the Cobber and made 22 saves.

The same two teams will play again on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2:30 p.m.
