Unbeaten Streak Comes To An End

WINONA, Minn. (2/15/14)—Concordia's nine-game unbeaten streak finally came to an end as the Cobbers gave up a pair of first-period goals and lost 2-0 at St. Mary's.

Concordia entered the day with an 8-0-1 mark in their last nine games and having clinched a spot in the MIAC playoffs. The loss to the Cardinals drops CC to 10-9-4 overall and 9-5-2 in league play with two games remaining in the regular season. St. Mary's is now 7-15-1 in all games and 5-11-0 in the MIAC.

The series finale centered around special teams. The Cardinals scored both of their goals in the first period on the power play while the Cobbers were held scoreless in their three man-advantage situations.

St. Mary's got on the board at the 5:32 mark of the opening period and then added a second goal at 12:28. The goals came on the only two SMU power-play situations of the first frame.

St. Mary's outshot Concordia 30-24 in the game with the Cardinals collecting 10 shots in each of the three periods.

Madison Denny made 28 saves in goal for CC while Sarah Gustafson stopped all 24 shots she faced.

Concordia's offense was led by freshman Kristin Dreschel who finished with a team-high four shots on goal.

The Cobbers will close out the regular season when they host St. Catherine on Friday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 22. The two teams are currently in fourth and fifth place in the MIAC standings so the winner of next weekend's series will get to host the other in the first round of the conference playoffs on Friday, Feb. 28.
