Season-High Goal Mark = Fourth Straight Win

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (1/25/14)—Concordia put together scoring and great goaltending to post its fourth straight win. The Cobbers netted four unanswered goals and rolled over Augsburg 4-1 to complete the series sweep.

The four goals scored by the Cobbers is the most in a single game this season and helps move the team to 6-8-3 on the year. Concordia is now 5-4-1 in conference play and in fifth place in the MIAC standings.

Concordia's goal rush in the past four games has conveniently coincided with their return to league play in 2014. The Cobbers have scored 12 goals in their past four games which is two more than they scored in the first 10 games of the season.

The Cobbers gave up the first goal of the game in the fourth minute of the first period but would respond quickly as Kristin Dreschel scored within two minutes to tied the game at 1-1. Dreschel's second goal of the year was assisted by junior defenseman Libby Fransdal who now leads the team in assists with six.

The eventual game-winning goal came in the final minute of play in the opening period. Madison Gendreau scored an even-strength goal at 19:22 to put CC up 2-1. For Gendreau it was her second goal in as many games and third in the last four games. She leads the team in scoring with four goals. Cassey Petrich recorded the assist on the play.

After combining for 16 shots and three goals in the first period the pace of play slowed in the second. The two teams only had 12 shots and one score in the middle frame. Freshman Ellen Rethwisch staked the Cobbers to a comfortable two-goal lead when she tallied her second goal of the year at 16:51. Dreschel added the assist on the play to complete her two-point contest. Rethwisch has two goals and three assists on the season and is fourth on the team in scoring.

The scoring was completed by Anna Westmark who scored on the empty net after the Auggies had pulled their goalie in the final two minutes of play. Kaya Baker gave Westmark the puck to set up CC's fourth score on the day.

Once again the Cobbers received outstanding play between the pipes. Sophomore Madison Denny stopped 16 of the 17 shots she faced to earn her third victory of the season. Concordia's scoring outbreak in the last four games has coincided with a wall being placed in front of the Cobber goal. CC has only allowed two goals in the past four games.

Neither team was able to score on the power play. Both squads were 0-for-2 in the game on the PP.

Concordia returns home to put their four-game win streak on the line when they face Hamline in a two-game series on Jan.31-Feb.1.
