Script Remains The Same In 3-0 Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/18/14)—Concordia liked the script so much from their 3-0 win over St. Benedict on Friday night they recycled it on Saturday. For the second straight game the Cobbers received goals from three different players, got solid shutout play from a young goaltender and beat the Blazers 3-0.

Concordia netted a single goal in each period to win their second straight game – the longest win streak of the year for CC. The Cobbers have now won three of their last five games, are 3-2-2 in their last seven games and move to 4-8-3 on the season. The weekend sweep of CSB vaults Concordia into sixth place in the MIAC standings, just two points out of the No.4 spot. St. Ben's is now 4-11-0 overall and 1-7-0 in the conference.

Saturday's first period would be the most wide open offensive attack for both teams during the entire two-game series. The teams combined for 31 shots but it was a goal by Jess Nelson that gave Concordia the only score of the frame. Nelson's tally at 8:20 was her first collegiate goal and came on the power play. Amber Schaack and Ellen Rathwisch were credited with the assists on CC's fourth power play score in the past five games.

The game settled down in the second and third periods with the teams combining for only 36 more shots in the final 40 minutes of play. Kaya Baker put the Cobbers up 2-0 with a goal at the back end of the middle period and then Bri Flynn scored at 9:32 of the third to give CC a comfortable three-goal cushion. It was the second goal of the season for both players. Nelson assisted on Flynn's goal to cap her two-point contest.

The other part of the script that remained the same was the solid goaltending Concordia has received game in and game out. On Friday freshman Andrea Klug earned her first collegiate shutout and on Saturday sophomore Madison Denny picked up her third blanking of the season and seventh career shutout.

Denny stopped all 33 shots she faced to lower her goals against average to 1.97 on the year. She now has a 92.9% save percentage.

St. Ben's goalie Dory Johnson made 29 saves on the day as CSB outshot the Cobbers 33-32.

Concordia will take to the road to play Augsburg on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24-25 in a two-game series on the campus of Augsburg.
