Defense Limits #7 UW-River Falls But Offense Is AWOL

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/10/14)—One day after scoring a pair of goals and beating Concordia Unversity, the Cobbers were held scoreless against No.7-ranked UW-River Falls and lost 3-0.

Concordia gave up a single goal in the first and then two more in the third as they fell for the seventh time this season. The Cobbers are now 2-7-3 on the year. The Falcons remain unbeaten in their last nine game and improve to 9-3-2.

The Cobbers went toe-to-toe with nationally-ranked River Falls for the first 20 minutes of play. Concordia held a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period of play but trailed 1-0 on the scoreboard after the Falcons scored at the 7:05 mark.

Unfortunately for Concordia the 10 first-period shots would be more than they would get in the second and third frames combined. River Falls tightened their defensive zone coverage and only allowed six shots by Concordia in the final 40 minutes of the game.

The Falcons would put the game out of reach in the first nine minutes of the final period. A goal at 1:06 and another at 8:54 would seal the victory.

Concordia's defense played well all night long and only allowed River Falls to come away with 26 total shots on goal. That is the third lowest shot total of the season for the Falcons.

Cobber goalie Madison Denny made 23 saves in the game while UW-River Falls netminder Ashley Kuechle turned aside all 16 shots she faced to pick up her fourth shutout of the season.

Freshman Bri Flynn had a team-high four shots on goal for the Cobbers. Jess Nelson added three shots.

Neither team was able to score on the power play. CC held the Falcons scoreless in their five man-advantage situations while Concordia failed to score on its lone power play attempt.

The teams will finish off the two-game series on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
