Two-Fer Thursday Nets New Year's First Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/09/14)—It was 2-fer Thursday for Concordia. The Cobbers got huge games from two freshmen, scored two goals for the second straight game and earned their second win of the season as they beat Concordia (Wis.) 2-1.

The Cobbers showed little signs of a four-week break for the Christmas holiday. Concordia scored the opening goal of the game in the fifth minute of play and never trailed as they upped their overall record to 2-6-3 on the year. The Falcons lose their second straight one-goal game and have their season record evened at 6-6-0.

Brittany Oliver scored her first goal of the season to get the Cobbers on the board at 4:22 of the opening period. The goal was assisted by Bekah Wright and would give CC a lead they would never relinquish. It was Wright's first point of the season. The Cobbers dominated the opening 20 minutes of play, outshooting the Falcons 17-2.

Concordia University was able to get back in the game in the second period and had more zone time. The Cobbers still held an 11-6 edge in shots for the frame but both teams had quality chances from around the goal crease.

Amber Schaack was the first freshman to make her mark on the game when she gave the Cobbers a 2-0 lead with a power-play tally at 5:14 of the final period. Schaack scored the game-winning goal only two seconds into the man-advantage situation. Jess Nelson was able to win the draw and get it back to Schaack who beat the Falcon goalie. It was the Cobbers' first power-play goal in the last seven games and only their third power-play goal in their first 11 games of the season.

The teams would play at a back-and-forth pace for the final 14 minutes of the game and the Cobber defense never allowed the Falcons to get a sustained attack on net. Whenever Concordia University did break down the Cobber blueliners, freshman goalie Andrea Klug was there to extinguish any Falcon goal attempt.

Concordia University finally got on the board at the 15:28 mark of the final frame but it would be too late as the Cobber defense was able to routinely clear the zone in the last two minutes of play.

Klug finished the game with 11 saves and earned her first collegiate victory. She also lowered her team-leading goals against average to 1.68 and now owns a 93.1% save percentage.

Falcon goalie Jennifer DeGeorge stopped 32 shots as the Cobbers wound up outshooting CU 34-12.

The Cobbers will have little time to rest before their next game. CC will host No.7-ranked UW-River Falls in a two-game series on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 10-11.
