Baker's First Collegiate Goal Cooks Up 1-1 Tie

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn.  (12/07/13)—Kaya Baker picked the perfect time to score her first collegiate goal as she tied the game with St. Thomas midway through the third period and helped Concordia tie the Tommies 1-1 in overtime in Mendota Heights.

The game stayed true to Concordia's season M.O. as a low-scoring affair that was decided in the third period. Baker's goal was only the third for the Cobbers in the past five games. CC is now 1-6-2 overall this season and 0-4-1 in conference play. All nine of Concordia's games this year have been against opponents ranked in the top 18 of the nation. St. Thomas remains unbeaten in the MIAC and moves to 5-1-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the league.

The teams skated through two scoreless periods. The Cobbers could never get on the board despite outshooting St. Thomas 26-13 through the first 40 minutes of play.

The Tommies got on the board first when they scored at the 3:35 mark of the third period. Concordia then survived a six-shot flurry from St. Thomas before the Tommies were called for a cross checking penalty at 8:47 of the final frame. The power play helped reestablish the Cobbers' offensive attack and it paved the way for the eventual game-tying goal.

Baker was in the right spot at the right time when she finished of her first collegiate goal just 43-seconds after the end of the power play opportunity.

Concordia had to survive one final scare in the final seconds of regulation when a St. Thomas forward broke free on a breakaway. Fortunately for CC, sophomore goalie Madison Denny wouldn't be denied and came up with the game-saving stop.

The Cobbers outshot St. Thomas 36-30 in the game.

Denny finished 29 saves and is now 1-4-1 on the season. Tommie goalie Alise Reidel made 35 stops.

Concordia was 0-for-3 on the power play and went 0-for-8 in man-advantage situations on the weekend. CC is scoreless in their past 13 man-advantage situations and is just 2-for-27 on the power play this season.

The Cobbers will finish off its pre-Christmas schedule when they play at Bethel in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. The two teams slit their regular-season series earlier in the year.
