Trio In The Third Tumbles Cobbers

BLAINE, Minn. (11/23/13)—A three-goal third period proved to be the difference in Concordia's game at Bethel on Saturday. The Cobber conceded a trio of last-period goals, lost 4-1 and had to settle for the series split with the Royals.

Concordia (1-5-1/1-3-0 MIAC) was done in by a series of penalties in the third period against Bethel. The Cobbers were whistled for four straight penalties in the first 10 minutes of the third period including two at the same time which led to a 5-on-3 situation. Bethel took advantage of the two-man advantage and scored the game-winning goal just 6-seconds after they started the power play.

Concordia was then forced to chase the game in the final 10 minutes of play and gave up two goals in the final seven minutes. Bethel added an insurance goal at 13:24 and then finished off the scoring with a tally at the 18:25 mark.

Anna Westmark scored her first goal of the season to get Concordia off to a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of the first period. Westmark's goal at 3:40 was assisted by Madison Gendreau and Jessie Kongelf and staked the Cobbers to a 1-0 lead for most of the opening frame.

Bethel (4-2-0/3-1-0 MIAC) was able to tie the game at 1-1 in the final five minutes of the first. The Royals scored their first goal of the series at 15:18 and then the teams skated through a scoreless second period to set the stage for the three-goal third.

The teams were even in shots on goal for the game. Concordia and Bethel both put up 24 shots for the three periods. Cobber goalie Madison Denny stopped 20 shots while Erika Allen turned aside 23 of the 24 shots she faced.

Cobber freshman Kristin Dreschel led all players with four shots in the game while Westmark, Gendreau and Jess Nelson all had three shots.

Concordia was 0-for-2 on the power play and was sent to the box on six occasions. Bethel scored the game-winning goal on the power play which was their only score in four man-advantage attempts. The Royals had three penalties in the game.

The Cobbers will have a two-week break for the Thanksgiving holiday and then return to action by heading to St. Paul to take on St. Thomas in a two-game series on Dec. 6-7.
