Three In The Third Tumbles Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/15/13)—It was the start Concordia wanted against No.7-ranked Gustavus in the series but unfortunately the ending turned a little sour and the Cobbers lost 4-1 in the series opener.

The Cobbers scored the first goal of the game but then saw the nationally ranked Gusties rattle off four straight goals to take the 4-1 win in the conference opener for both teams.

Freshman Amber Schaack scored the first goal of the game in the third minute to give Concordia a 1-0 lead before the fans had a chance to settle into their seats. Schaack's power play goal at 2:52 was her first collegiate tally and the team's second goal of the season. Jess Nelson and Ellen Rethwisch earned assists on the play.

Concordia (0-3-1/0-1-0 MIAC) held the lead for a full 11 minutes before Gustavus started their four-goal trek. The Gusties tied the game at the 14:24 mark on an even-strength goal by Allison Eder-Zdechlik. It would be Eder-Zdechlik's first of two goals on the night.

The teams then skated through a scoreless second period.

Gustavus (2-1-1/1-0-0 MIAC) netted the game-winning goal at 4:05 and then added insurance goals at 7:30 and 18:26. Eder-Zdechlik netted the goal at 18:26 to pick up her MIAC-leading fifth goal of the year.

Concordia was outshot 35-20 for the game. Schaack had a team-high six shots in the game while Courtney  Boucher put up seven for the Gusties.

Cobber goalie Madison Denny stopped 31 shots and Tara Hovestad made 19 saves to earn the win.

The same two teams will take the ice at the Moorhead Sports Center to finish off the series on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m.
