Snake-Bit Cobbers Get Goal But Not Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/09/13)—The scoreless streak reached 184 minutes before freshman Ellen Rethwisch was finally able to get Concordia on the board for the 2013-14 season but it was a case of "too little too late" as the Cobbers lost 3-1 to UW-Stevens Point.

The Cobbers entered the game without a goal in their first two contests and that carried over to the first two periods on Saturday against Stevens Point. It looked like CC would go three games without scoring before Rethwisch knocked home a power play goal with 7-seconds remaining in the final period.

Concordia is now 0-2-1 on the season with all three games coming against teams ranked in the top 20 of the nation. The Pointers remained unbeaten on the year and move to 3-0-1.

The teams skated to a 0-0 overtime tie on Friday and it seemed that the first goal in the series would win the game. Stevens Point came out and took control of the opening period. They wound up outshooting the Cobbers 12-4 in the first 20 minutes of play. The Cobber defense didn't allow many quality chances to start the game until the Pointers finally cracked the code and scored the first goal at the 8:45 mark.

Stevens Point added to their lead with a pair of goals in the first eight minutes of the second period. After Concordia gave up the third goal on a power play at 7:54, CC coach Sarah Erickson took timeout which seemed to energize the team and the Cobbers were able to start getting the puck into the Pointer zone with possession. Concordia and Stevens Point had three shots each in the final 12 minutes of play in the second period the Cobbers held a 12-9 advantage in shots in the third period.

Concordia's goal came after a flurry of penalty calls against the Pointers. The Cobbers had a 5-on-3 advantage for almost a full two minutes and couldn't capitalize. CC finally scored on UWSP's fourth penalty in a span of 3:43.

Rethwisch was standing on the right side of the net and a passing combination from Madison Gendreau and Bri Flynn set up Rethwisch for a one-time shot that found the back of the net.

Stevens Point finished with a 31-20 advantage in shots on goal. Concordia had only eight shots total in the first two periods but then put up 12 in the final 20 minutes.

Cobber goalie Madison Denny made 28 saves on the day while UWSP Janna Beilke-Skoug stopped 19 shots to earn the win.

Concordia will open MIAC play next weekend when they host No.3-ranked Gustavus on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-16. Both games will be played at the Moorhead Sports Center.
