Same Score Line, Different Journey

ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/09/13)—The score line was the same but the path to the one-goal victory was completely different as Concordia needed a goal just 17-seconds into overtime to post a 2-1 win over Hamline on Saturday. The win gives the Cobbers the series sweep against the Pipers and moves them into a tie for second place in the league standings.

On Friday Concordia bolted to a 2-0 lead and then held on to post the 2-1 win. On Saturday the Cobbers needed to rally from a 1-0 deficit in the third period to get the game winner in OT. The win is the fourth straight for Concordia and sixth in the last eight games. CC is now 10-7-3 in all games and 9-4-1 against conference opponents.

For the second straight game Concordia held a decided edge in shots on goal over the Pipers but couldn't get the puck in the net. The Cobbers had a 38-19 advantage in shots on goal on Saturday and outshot Hamline 78-41 for the series but only came away with four goals.

The Cobbers outshot the Pipers 21-12 in the first two periods but were down 1-0 after HU posted their only goal of the game at 13:26 of the first period.

Concordia would have to wait until the final 10 minutes of the final period before they got on the board. Bekah Wright came up with the huge game-tying goal when she netted her second goal of the season at 8:19. Breann Julius and Brittany Oliver picked up the assists on the play. For Julius it was her third assist on the weekend.

The Cobbers would then pepper the Hamline goal with eight shots in a span of four minutes midway through the period. The Pipers were able to withstand the storm and the teams went into the extra period.

Concordia made short work of the golden goal when Anna Westmark knocked home the game winner just 17-seconds into the period. CC won the draw and got the puck into the Piper end before Abby Taffe set up Westmark for her eighth goal of the year.

Rebecca Hendrickson got the start in goal for Concordia for the second straight game and stopped 18 of the 19 shots she faced. Hamline goalie Sarah Schneekloth made 36 saves for the three periods.

Concordia will finally return home to host St. Mary's and Augsburg in the final two conference series of the regular season. The Cobbers will square off against the Cardinals on Friday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. Both games will be at the Moorhead Sports Center.
