First-Period Goals Are Enough In 2-1 At Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/08/13)—Concordia scored a pair of first-period goals and the Cobber defense made them stand up as they outlasted Hamline 2-1 on Friday in St. Paul.

The Cobbers scored at 1:51 and then 15:41 of the opening period and only allowed a power play goal midway through the second period as they held on for their third straight win. Concordia is now 8-4-1 in MIAC play and remains in sole possession of third place in the league standings. CC is now two games above the .500 mark in all games and moves to 9-7-3.

The story of the game was the Cobber defense which did not allow the Pipers to get more than 10 shots in any single period. Concordia held Hamline to just five shots on goal in the first period and seven in the pressure-filled third frame.  In the end, HU had only 22 shots on goal which is the third straight game that the Cobbers have not allowed their opponents to get more than 26 shots.

The offense came up with just enough scoring in the form of an even-strength goal and a power play goal in the first 16 minutes of play. Brittany Oliver started the two-goal period when she netted her second goal of the year at the 1:51 mark. Breann Julius picked up the first of her two assists on the night on the play. Madison Gendreau then made it 2-0 for Concordia when she scored on the power play at 15:41. Julius and Ali Nelson set up Gendreau's eighth goal of the year.

Concordia then failed to score in their final 27 shots of the game and went 0-for-2 on the power play in their man-advantage situations in the final two frames.

Cobber sophomore goalie Rebecca Hendrickson made 21 saves in the game to earn her fourth win of the season. She is now 4-2-2 on the year. Sarah Schneekloth turned aside 38 shots and was saddled with the loss.

The two teams will complete their two-game series on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Warner Coliseum in St. Paul.
