Back-To-Back 5-Goal Games Leads To Series Sweep

ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/02/13)—Concordia bolted to a 3-0 lead at the start of the second period and went on to down St. Kate's 5-2 to sweep the two-games series against the Wildcats.

Anna Westmark and Abby Taffe had two goals each for the Cobbers as CC scored five goals in back-to-back games since the middle of the 2010-11 season. Concordia had only scored more than three goals in just one game this season before the series at SCU.

The win pushes Concordia's overall record over the .500 mark. CC is now 8-7-3 in all games and 7-4-1 in conference play. The Cobbers are currently in third place in the league standings.

Cobber leading scorer Breann Julius opened the scoring with an unassisted even-strength goal at 13:58 of the first period. Westmark then netted her second goal in as many games with less than two minutes left in the first frame. Madison Gendreau and Sarah Thedens were credited with the assists on the play.

Taffe would put the Cobbers up 3-0 at the 1:00 mark of the second period. Julius and Westmark picked up the assists.

St. Kate's then made it a game by scoring the next two goals. The Wildcats picked up their first at 13:37 of the second period and then got to within one goal at 3-2 at 1:09 of the third.

Taffe and Westmark put the game out of reach with a pair of goals in a span of 2:33 midway through the final period. Taffe recorded her sixth goal of the year at 9:23 and then Westmark scored her seventh goal of the season at 11:56. Ali Nelson had the helper on Taffe's goal and Libby Fransdal was credited with her fifth assists of the season on Westmark's tally.

The Cobbers outshot St. Kate's 15-5 in the third period and 36-22 for the game. CC sophomore goalie Rebecca Hendrickson stopped 20 shots to pick up her third win of the season. Wildcat goalie Samanth Geissler made 31 saves on the day.

Concordia will finish off their 10-game road trip when they play at Hamline next weekend in a two-game series.
