Seven Penaties Killed And A Season-High Goal Output

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/18/13)—Concordia survived seven penalty-kill situations, scored at least one goal in all three periods and went on to shutout St. Ben's 4-0.

The Cobbers gave up seven power-play opportunities but did not allow a single goal and came away with their fifth win of the season. The Blazers lose for only their second time in the last six games and fall to 4-4-3 and 2-4-1 in the MIAC.

Concordia used a balance scoring attack to score more than three goals in a game for the first time all season. Jenna Westerham, Madison Gendreau, Kelsey Vandegrift and Bekah Wright all scored even-strength tallies to help the Cobbers to their most explosive goal production of the year.

While the offense was producing a season-high in goals, freshman goalie Madison Denny was recording her second collegiate shutout. Denny stopped all 18 shots she faced as she lowered her goals against average to 1.70 and upped her season save percentage to 93.2%.

Westerham started the scoring in the first period when she connected on her second goal of the year at 6:35. Libby Fransdal earned the first of her two assists on the night on the eventual game-winning goal.

Gendreau and Vendegrift would score second-period goals. Gendreau scored in the first three minutes of play with an assist from Abby Taffe and then Breann Julius set up Vandegrift at 12:13.

The final goal of the game came from Bekah Wright who finished off the scoring at 16:32 when she netted her first goal of the season. Fransdal came away with her second helper of the game and third of the season.

Concordia doubled up St. Ben's in shots on goal. The Cobbers started slow but then finished with 15 shots in each of the second and third periods and went on to hold a 36-18 edge in shots.

The Cobbers' penalty-kill unit stepped up in the third period. After killing off a single power play in each of the first and second periods, the CC special teamers stopped five different CSB power play chances.

The two teams will finish off their series on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m.
