One Goal = One Point

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/17/12)—Concordia's offense could only muster one goal against Bethel in their two-game series on Friday and Saturday. The Cobbers rallied to gain a 1-1 overtime tie in the opener and then were held scoreless for the first time all season and lost 2-0 in the second game on Saturday.

The tie and loss moves Concordia's season record to 3-2-3. The loss on Saturday was the first in conference play for CC and drops their record to 2-1-1. Bethel is now 4-3-1 in their first eight games of the year. The 2-0 win was their first league win of the year and pushes them to 1-2-1.

The story of the weekend was the play of Bethel All-Conference goalie Jess Newstrom. Newstrom stopped 52 of the 53 shots she faced on the weekend. Concordia outshot the Royals by a combined total of 53-42 in the two games but could never come up with key goals.

On Friday, reigning MIAC Player of the Week Madison Gendreau had to come to Concordia's rescue when she scored the only goal of the series for CC. Gendreau tied the game at the 3:01 mark of the third period to help the Cobbers come away with a point for the series. Brittany Oliver and Starr Garrett were credited with the assists on Gendreau's second goal of the season. She now has six overall points on the season which is second best for CC. For Garrett it was her first collegiate point.

Concordia's best chances for a goal in the second game on Saturday came in the first period when they outshot the Royals 11-4. The Cobbers also had their only two power play chances of the game in the opening 20 minutes of play. To make matters even harder for CC, they found themselves down by a goal heading into the first after intermission after holding the majority of the play in the BU defensive zone.

Bethel was able to tack on a second goal midway through the second period. The Cobbers could never get on the board in the final two periods of play and watched their shot total dwindle. After having 11 shots in the first frame, CC had only 16 in the final 40 minutes of play.

Madison Denny played both games in goal for Concordia she made 21 saves on Friday and then stopped 18 shots on Saturday.

The Cobbers will now have a two-week break before returning to play on Friday, Nov. 30 when they host St. Thomas in the first game of a two-game series.
