Last-Minute Goal Forces Cobbers To Settle For 1-1 Tie

DE PERE, Wis. (10/27/12)—Concordia and St. Norbert battled to a 1-1 overtime tie in De Pere, Wis. on Saturday in a game that turned into an extended power-play practice. In the end it was a last-minute goal by the Green Knights that salvaged the tie.

The two teams combined for 13 power plays and both goals in the game were scored on man-advantage situations.

The game was a close checking affair that highlighted the goalies and defenses of both teams. Neither team was able to break onto the scoreboard until the third period. The two teams combined for 44shots in the first 40 minutes of play. The Cobbers had 28 shots and Green Knights goalie Kaley Gibson made 28 saves. St. Norbert had 16 shots on goal and Cobber goal Rebecca Hendrickson had 16 saves.

The momentum of the game turned in the third period when the Cobbers scored the first goal at the 5:37 mark. Breann Julius' second goal of the season put CC up 1-0 and jump-started the green Knight offense. Anna Westmark and Maddy Gendreau were credited with the assists on Concordia's second power play goal in as many games.

St. Norbert then pressed the attack and was finally rewarded in the final minute of regulation. After the Cobbers were whistled for a hooking penalty at 18:46, the Green Knights pulled Gibson to set up a 6-on-4 advantage. St. Norbert then picked up the game-tying goal with just 36-seconds to play in the period.

Hendrickson kept the game tied in the extra period. St. Norbert outshot the Cobbers 4-0 in overtime and Hendrickson shut down all four attempts.

The Green Knights held a 36-32 edge in shots on goal for the game. CC was whistled for six penalties and went 1-for-7 on the power play while St. Norbert came away with seven penalties and was 1-for-6 in man-advantage situations.

Hendrickson finished the game with 35 saves for CC and Gibson turned aside 31 shots for St. Norbert.  

Concordia will play a pair of non-conference road games against MIAC opponents next weekend. The Cobbers will play at St. Ben's on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. and then square off against Bethel on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. at the National Sports Center in Blaine.
